Muscle Energy Techniques (MET)
Quick Takeaways
Gentle & active: You lightly contract; we guide the position and breath.
Targets root cause: Reduces muscle spasm and improves joint mechanics.
Fast results: Many patients feel easier motion right away.

How MET Works
Your physical therapist positions a joint or muscle at a comfortable barrier, then you perform a sub-max contraction (about 10–20% effort) for a few seconds. After you relax and exhale, we take up the slack into the new range and repeat.
This resets overactive muscles, lengthens shortened tissues, and restores balance between opposing muscle groups.
Conditions We Treat with MET
Neck or low-back stiffness
Pelvic/hip asymmetry (SI joint dysfunction)
Headaches from cervical tension
Restricted shoulder rotation
Hamstring, hip flexor, or calf tightness
Postural imbalances from desk work or sport
Limited rotation for golfers, throwers, and racquet athletes
- and more!
What a Session Looks Like
Assessment: Movement testing to find the true restriction.
MET Application: Brief, guided contractions with targeted breathing.
Reinforcement: Mobility drills and activation work to hold the gain.
Progression: Strength and motor control so results stick.
Expect gentle pressure, no forceful thrusts, and immediate re-testing so you can feel the change.
Results You Can Expect
- Less pain and muscle guarding
- Improved flexibility and joint alignment
- Smoother, more efficient movement
- Better carryover into sport, lifting, and daily life
